World Water Day 2024 Rishilpi Water Treatment Plant Project Gopinathpur, Binerpota, Satkhira "Water for Peace" 22 March 2024, World Water Day. This year's theme is 'Water for Peace', which highlights the critical role water plays in world stability and prosperity. Water crises, lack of right to water or inequality in terms of access to drinkable water can lead to tension between nations. How can water be the bearer of peace? Water scarcity is a growing problem in every continent, with poorer countries being the most severely affected. Water can be a catalyst for peace in building resilience against climate change and sustainable development for growing populations. A water source can unite a population entitled to it, regardless of their caste or religion and play a role in building peace. At the transregional level, ‘shared water resources’ and 'hydro diplomacy' can be important in enhancing long-term stability. The situation in Bangladesh Although four of the largest rivers in South Asia flow through Bangladesh, many people in the country do not have access to clean drinking water due to water pollution. A recent survey has found that the quality of water in many Bangladeshi regions has deteriorated significantly over the years, risking its people's wellbeing. Also, severe drought occurs during summer due to a lack of water in various rivers of Bangladesh. ● 6.8 million people (41%) do not have access to reliable safe drinking water. ● 10 crore people (61%) are deprived of safe sanitation facilities. ● North Bengal is suffering from desertification due to inequitable access to the Teesta River. What is your responsibility? ● Stop wasting water ● Use surface water instead of groundwater ● Be sensible when using brackish water in shrimp farming ● Avoid polluting water ● Save nature ● Collect and store rainwater
