WORLD WATER DAY 2026 Theme: Water and Gender “Where Water Flows, Equality Grows” ________________________________________ Global Water Situation Water is essential for life, yet 2.1 billion people still lack access to safe drinking water and many communities lack proper sanitation and hygiene services. The global water crisis affects everyone — but not equally. Where safe water is not available close to home, women and girls are most affected. They often spend hours collecting water, managing household water needs, and caring for family members made sick by unsafe water. This limits their education, health, safety and opportunities. ________________________________________ Key Message for 2026 The theme “Water and Gender” highlights the link between water access and gender equality. • Women must be included in water leadership and decision-making. • Water services must be inclusive, sustainable and climate-resilient. • Safe water and sanitation are basic human rights for all. When women and girls have equal voices in water decisions, services become more effective and sustainable. ________________________________________ Play Your Part Everyone can help solve the water crisis. Individuals: Use water wisely and support hygiene and women’s participation. Schools: Promote water conservation and safe sanitation for all students. Organizations & Companies: Invest in safe water systems and support women’s leadership. Governments: Ensure safe drinking water and sanitation for all. Men and boys should also act as allies for gender equality. ________________________________________ Our Vision Achieving SDG 6: Safe Water and Sanitation for All by 2030. Water empowers women and girls, improves health and strengthens communities. **Water is Life. Water is Equality. Where Water Flows, Equality Grows.
